Waits-Mast 2015 Pinot Noir, Deer Meadows Vineyard, Anderson Valley

Waits-Mast 2015 Pinot Noir, Deer Meadows Vineyard, Anderson Valley

We're thrilled to release our new Pinot Noir from Deer Meadows Vineyard in Anderson Valley. 2015 was a low-yielding vintage; our one acre allocation from Deer Meadows produced only 1.4 tons. This means smaller berries and more concentrated flavors delivered in an elegant package of dark cherry and exotic spices. It also means lower production: we bottled only 70 cases of our 2015 Pinot Noir from Deer Meadows.

We're also honored that this new wine is featured in the April 2018 "Year's Best Pinot Noir" issue of Wine & Spirits magazine, with a rating of 91 points. This is the fourth time that Waits-Mast has been included in this annual roundup of domestic Pinot Noir in the magazine. Here are the tasting notes from Wine & Spirits writer Joshua Greene: “Brian Mast and Jennifer Waits purchase this fruit from Rich Savoy, who farms Deer Meadows, a southeast-facing slope above Boonville at an elevation of 1,600 feet. Mast and Waits ferment it spontaneously as whole berries, producing a foresty pinot noir with savory notes of beef stock and roots. It's a pretty wine, generous enough to serve with seared duck breast.” 70 cases were produced.

Additional Press:

92 pts: Wine Enthusiast: Aromas that are slightly earthy at first become spicy, complex and fruity and lead to good red-cherry and rhubarb flavors in this medium-bodied elegant wine. Moderate tannins and good acidity balance it out well.

Tasting notes: The wine is pale garnet with medium intensity aromas of ripe raspberry, star anise, forest floor and a touch of cedar. Consistently from vintage to vintage, the Deer Meadows displays the complexity and interplay of fruit and earth aromas and flavors. On the palate, the bright acidity is supported by layers of red fruits and Asian spice. The silky tannins give way to the lengthy finish which persists with mouth-filling pomegranate and a hint of cream.
Cellar potential: Now through 2024
Release date: March 2017

Situated at 1600 feet elevation, with a commanding south-east facing view of Anderson Valley, Rich Savoy’s vineyard off of Deer Meadows Road above Boonville is meticulously farmed in multiple blocks that are planted in a northwest orientation. In the 2014 vintage, we acquired three different clones of Pinot Noir, 115, 777 and Calera, to make just six barrels. Wines of the 2014 vintage are expressive immediately out of the bottle and the Deer Meadows is no exception.
